Travelling to Thailand from the UK or Europe can add up. So if you’re looking for cheap and free things to do in Hua Hin read on. Save money, but still have fun and explore this beautiful, laid-back and calm coastal town by the sea.
#1 Take a free walk along the beach in the morning and watch the sunrise in Hua Hin.
See a monk walking along the sand with the glowing orange sun in the background. Watch the fishermen cast their nets waist deep in the water. See the traditional Thai fishing boats rocking on the horizon. It’s beautiful. It’s a cultural experience and it’s absolutely free. There are some great and romantic places to stay along the beach in Hua Hin, so early morning walks can be party of your everyday routine during your getaway by the sea.
#2 Vana Nava Water Jungle is free for guests who stay at two Hua Hin resorts.
If you stay at the Holiday Inn Resort Hua Hin or the InterContinental, access to this water park is free. You can go as many times as you want during your stay. The water park is located right next to the Holiday Inn and from the InterContinental there’s a complimentary shuttle. If you’re not staying at either of these hotels, entry will cost you, but if you book online or get your tickets in advance you can save.
#3 The night markets are free to enter and wander through in Hua Hin.
There are some great night markets in dotted along the coast in Hua Hin. For the typical Thai-night-market experience head to the centre of town to the Hua Hin Night Market or the Hua Hin Night Bazaar. You’ll find similar stores and items to the city markets in Bangkok. There are also some great seafood restaurants and stalls along the way. Heading south is the Cicada Market and Tamarind Market. These have a more creative and designer-feel. There’s live music, food and a mix of souvenirs and locally made and designed wares. At Cicada Market, you can also wander the open-air gallery and see local artists’ works for free.
#4 Walk along the beach to Khao Takiab (Chopsticks Hill) and meet the monkeys for free.
There’s no entrance fee. You can wander around this temple complex and see great views of the Hua Hin coastline. You can also meet the monkeys who are cheeky and definitely not afraid of humans and will help themselves to your ice-cream, soda and anything that’s in your bag.
#5 Visit Plearn Wan and step back in time at this retro 50s-inspired market street. It’s free to enter and wander around.
See what the streetscape and markets were like back in the 1950s. For many Thai people, this place is super nostalgic. It does have a mini theme-park feel, which verges on kitsch, but it’s free and something you can do with the family one afternoon or early evening in Hua Hin.
#6 Kitesurf watching is free and fun on the beach at Hua Hin.
With the prime wind conditions, sunny weather and perfect sea conditions, kite surfers flock to the coast in Hua Hin. The main kite season runs from October to May, however many people kite surf all year round. It’s a beautiful sight when the sky is dotted with the arches of the kites against the blue sky and the white manicured tips of the waves. Maybe try taking a kitesurfing lesson while you’re in Hua Hin?
